Welcome to the new Iowa Irish Language and Culture Website! The aim of this site is to provide Irish speakers and those interested in the language with a centralized source of information on classes, workshops, and other events related to the Irish language in particular, and Irish culture in general.
Learn Irish Des Moines is shortly going to launch a fundraiser in aid of the Iowa Irish Language and Culture Weekend. Currently, the idea is for an "Irish Day" on Saturday, 21st of March 2020. This would have two main parts –
(1) An "Irish Expo" in the afternoon, with tables representing all aspects of Irish culture – language, music, dance, sport, arts, tourism, etc. Alongside this there would be workshops – short intensive classes in language, music, etc.
(2) An Evening of Irish Music and Fun – a concert of performances of Irish music, dance, and storytelling.
There would also be a silent auction and/or raffle, and perhaps an online fundraising campaign.
This is in preliminary stage, though I have started looking for a venue(s), and I have approached potential exhibitors and performers. I intend to have a meeting among those interested in the next few weeks. Any ideas and suggestions you might have would be most welcome.
Our next immersion weekend will take place in Coe College, Cedar Rapids, on the 12th - 14th June 2020. Further details can be found on the Facebook Event Page.
The fifth annual Irish Language and Culture Weekend was held at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, on the 14th - 16th June. Almost forty students attended the event, and classes were held at four levels. This year's instructors were Tom Jeffers, Dineen Grow, Bairbre Ní Chiardha, and Briain Ó hAirt.
Michael O'Halloran gave a fascinating talk on Irish archaeology. There were many musicians who provided entertainment well into the night.
